Bogus PHPkitchen Spam Messages

Posted on 15 March 2004 by Demian Turner

I can only hope this is not widespread, I just received the following spam:

If only I had such a nice marketing department 😉 If this is indeed the broadcast spam message it appears to be and others are receiving similar emails, please totally disregard it. Not sure whether to take this as a compliment, and I don\’t know where these people get their ideas from – rest assured any email addresses registered with this site are never made public nor shared for nonsense purposes.

Not that I thought any reader of this site would unzip a spam attachment 😉

You’re onto a story there. Was reading up on MyDoom (and the same applies to it’s variants I believe) and one of the things it does, once it get’s itself install, is scan PHP scripts for email addresses.

Personally I’ve been getting (bogus) messages from Adam Tractenberg, Luis Argerich, various names @ and names that turn up in PHP projects on Sourceforge.

    Clever stuff…

    Hi Harry

Interesting, that would be highly annoying if a virus was able to go through personal databases, etc, I will run a virus checker on my machines to be sure.

However the template used by the spammer doesn\’t resemble anything I have, iow I don\’t have any code/etc that refers to \’the PHPkitchen team\’, which makes me think the message was hand-crafted.

The non-profit organization I work for has been receiving emails exactly like yours, only with our organization\’s info. Putting a password on a zip file and then giving the password to the recipient is pure genius though, and if you don\’t think it is, then tell that to someone I work with that followed the steps and ran the program in the zip file.
