Directory Browsing with Apache

Posted on 07 September 2002 by Demian Turner

You can specify in your httpd.conf which directories on your webserver should be browsable, ie, if there isn’t an index.* file then users will see a list of the files in that directory.

    A more complete solution:

    1. turn off dir browsing be default:

[open bracket] Directory /var/www/htdocs [close bracket]
    Options FollowSymLinks -Indexes
    AllowOverride Options

    Order allow,deny
    Allow from all

    [open bracket] /Directory [close bracket]

    2. enable it on a per-directory basis

[open bracket] Directory /var/www/htdocs/public_html/docs [close bracket]
    Options Indexes

    [open bracket] /Directory [close bracket]

Alternatively, enable dir browsing with a .htaccess file containing just the directive:

    Options Indexes
