Hundreds of computer servers are being built in Christchurch for post-production processing of coming releases of Lord of the Rings films.

Insite Technology, a subsidiary of Renaissance, is building servers each powered by Intel Xeon dual processors running at 2.2GHZ, and with four gigabytes of memory.

Digital Video Technologies (DVT), of Wellington, buys the machines for supply to Weta Digital, which digitally processes the films.

The trilogy was shot on film, which is converted to digital for the addition of special effects. It is then output to film for final release.
